농업혁명의 희생자는 덜 가진 인간인가, 가축인가?

오늘의 독서는 인간이 자신의 사리 사욕을 채우기 위해 얼마나 잔인해질 수 있는지 다시 한번 생각하게 만듭니다.
농업 혁명과 함께 시작된 가축의 비극 — 그 중에서도 ‘현대 육류 산업의 송아지’가 겪는 삶은 특히 마음을 무겁게 합니다.

📌 현대 산업용 육류농장에 갇힌 송아지의 삶

A modern calf in an industrial meat farm.

Immediately after birth the calf is separated from its mother and locked inside a tiny cage not much bigger than the calf’s own body. There the calf spends its entire life — about four months on average. It never leaves its cage, nor is it allowed to play with other calves or even walk — all so that its muscles will not grow strong. Soft muscles mean a soft and juicy steak.
The first time the calf has a chance to walk, stretch its muscles and touch other calves is on its way to the slaughterhouse.
In evolutionary terms, cattle represent one of the most successful animal species ever to exist. At the same time, they are some of the most miserable animals on the planet.

현대 산업용 육류농장에 갇힌 송아지의 삶

태어나자마자 송아지는 어미와 떼어 놓이고, 자기 몸집과 거의 다르지 않은 작은 우리에 갇힌다. 그곳에서 송아지는 평생을 보낸다 — 평균 약 넉 달 정도.
송아지는 우리를 절대 벗어나지 못하며, 다른 송아지와 놀거나 심지어 걷는 것조차 허용되지 않는다 — 모두 근육이 단단해지지 않도록 하기 위해서다.
부드러운 근육은 부드럽고 육즙이 많은 스테이크를 의미하기 때문이다.

송아지가 처음으로 걷고, 근육을 펴고, 다른 송아지를 만져볼 수 있는 순간은 도살장으로 가는 길 위에서이다.

진화론적 관점에서 보면, 소는 존재했던 동물 종 가운데 가장 성공적인 종 중 하나다. 그러나 동시에, 이 지구상에서 가장 비참한 동물 중 하나이기도 하다.
